Many homes are set to be at risk as daylight saving time comes to an end, new research suggests. The new data from The Co-Op Insurance reports that burglary claims rise by 34% when the clocks go back an hour and our time in daylight shortens.

Between the winter months of November and March, a persistent spike has been revealed by claims data since 2013, highlighting how many homes are being targeted by criminals. With shorter periods of daylight, the prolonged darkness helps to hide burglars at work, making them less likely to be seen or caught.

Therefore, with the darker mornings and earlier evenings upon us, providing easier opportunities for burglars, it’s time to consider a home security upgrade.

When Did the Clocks Change?

Your clocks will have gone back an hour at 2AM on Sunday 29th October 2018, taking us through the transition from British Summer Time (BST) to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

Clocks will then move forward again at 1AM on 31st March 2019, where we will experience longer periods of day light.

How Does This Affect My Home Insurance?

If your home is burgled, then most home insurance policies will cover you for it. However, most home insurance policies will need you to meet a certain set of requirements in order to claim.

A few examples of scenarios where your claim may be rejected include:

  • Leaving your home and forgetting to lock up
  • Your level of home security does not meet your insurers requirements
  • Leaving your home unoccupied for more than 30 consecutive days
  • High value items may not always be covered by your policy (e.g. jewellery, electronics)

Therefore, it is so important to maximise your home security, ensuring that your home insurer has no reason to reject your claim based on how secure your home is.

It is also vital to read through your home insurance policy and terms and conditions because although it may seem like a tiresome task, it is important for you to understand how you are covered and what you can do to make the most of your policy if something were to happen.
